2010 Jim Gardner Lecture

Defining Victoria square

At 2.30 pm on Sunday 25 July 2010 in the Christchurch Girls' High School auditorium, Matai Street

The annual, free public lecture will be given this year by Professor Geoffrey Rice of the Department of History, University of Canterbury's School of Humanities.

Professor Rice has taught and researched History at the university since 1973.  For many of those years he has gathered information and pictures of Victoria Square, Christchurch, observing its 160 years of development and changes.

Defining Victoria Square is the title of his account of one of the finest urban spaces in this country.  He has prepared an entirely new lecture on the topic, recalling its time as the colonial town's first central business district and the many alterations to its landscape and neighbouring buildings. He will be speaking also of its namesakes elsewhere and other great city squares.

All are welcome to attend this event at which the A C Rhodes Memorial Medal will be presented to Mrs Topsy Rule of the Sumner-Redcliffs Historical Society.  Click here for information about her long and productive contribution to local history and the Sumner Museum.
